Why Blue Team Keeps Losing in WARDOGS, and What Bulkhead Has Said About It

Blue losing started as a meme. The studio now says it is real. The game's own scoring rule explains why a reputation like that feeds itself.

Why Blue Team Keeps Losing in WARDOGS, and What Bulkhead Has Said About It
ExplainerSeason 1

Play WARDOGS for a weekend and someone will tell you: do not pick blue. Bulkhead's Supporter Edition listing names the three factions Lonestar, Valkyra and Manticore, players know them by colour, and blue is the one players call Lonestar.

For the first week after launch it was a joke. Then on 17 September Bulkhead's CEO answered it on X, and it stopped being one.

What Bulkhead has said

“We definitely have a balancing issue, But it's green team who win most of the time, green and red are fairly even.. and that's been the same way since pre-alpha. But blue getting destroyed is definitely a problem with mixed reasons.”

Three things in that post matter.

It confirms blue losing is real, not one streamer's bad night. It corrects the version going around, that red wins: the studio says green does, with red close behind. And “since pre-alpha” means the pattern is older than the meme, so the meme did not create it.

What it does not give is a number. Bulkhead has published no win rates by team, and we are not going to estimate one.

The rule that makes it worse

WARDOGS scores on headcount. Bulkhead's game mode video from 12 February puts it in one line: “Every 30 seconds the team with the most players in the control zone earns one point,” and the first team to 100 wins. Not the team with the most kills or the best position. The team with the most people standing in the zone.

There is no matchmaking to even the teams out. Asked in March how team balance would work, the studio answered: “we only use server browser. There's no skill-based matchmaking.” Players join a server and pick a side, which is why automatic team assignment is the fix players suggest most.

Put those two rules together and a reputation becomes a result. If players avoid blue when they join, blue has fewer people. Fewer people means blue wins fewer zone checks, because the zone counts people. Losing more confirms the reputation, and the next server avoids blue harder. None of that needs blue to be weaker at the start. It only needs players to believe it is.

That loop is our reading of the rules, not something Bulkhead has said, and the CEO's “mixed reasons” means there is more to it than one loop. It is the part of the problem that anyone reading the scoring rule can see.

What has been fixed so far

Nothing that names it. The Season 1 changelog of 9 September, the launch stability hotfix of 10 September and Patch 0.11 of 12 September contain no team balance change, no faction change and no change to how you pick a team.

Season 2 starts on 15 October, and Bulkhead has not said what is in it. The same day starts a wipe, which we cover in what resets and what you keep.

If you are on blue anyway

The rule that hurts blue also tells you what helps it: people in the zone. Blue is short of them, so on blue one more player alive inside the zone counts for more than on either other team.

Getting people there pays too. Bulkhead's store page lists “transporting friendlies to the zone” among the teamplay actions that earn cash, and chasing the Hot Zone earns “double the cash”. On a short team, the player driving the truck in is doing more for the score than the player sniping from the hill. If you are going to spend on the way in, our cost-per-life piece is the case for a gun you can afford to lose, such as the T-21 at $600.

Quick answers

Why does blue team always lose in WARDOGS? Bulkhead's CEO confirms blue loses more, for “mixed reasons”. The game scores by the number of players in the zone, and players avoid joining blue, which widens the gap.

Which team wins the most? Green, according to Bulkhead's CEO, with red close behind.

Is Bulkhead fixing it? The CEO calls it a problem. No patch had addressed it as of 24 September.

Should I avoid blue? Your call. If everyone does, blue stays short and keeps losing.
