Stodeh's Sniper Route Is Right. Season 1 Just Made It Twice as Long.
Every unlock level he names checks out. What changed underneath him is how long each one takes, and Bulkhead published the numbers.
Sep 15, 2026 · Early Access

On 9 September, the day before Early Access, the FPS creator Stodeh published a Recon guide called "You're Unlocking Snipers WRONG in WARDOGS". It has since passed 287,000 views, and the argument in it is good enough that we want to build on it rather than summarise it.
His route, in one line: ignore the first sniper entirely, spot your way to the SKS, take the Mosin Nagant and the SVD as they come, and treat the SV98 as the finish. In his words the SV98 is "basically the end game for the recon class", and the goal of the video is to get you there "as quickly as possible because it's all you'll probably need long term".
We checked every level he names against community-recorded progression data. All eight match exactly. Then we checked the calendar, and that is where the problem is.
His timings come from a build that no longer exists
Stodeh says in the video that he never got past Recon level 25 across the three beta tests, which is honest and also dates the footage. The video went up on 9 September. Bulkhead published the Season 1 changelog the same day and it went live with Early Access on 10 September 2026.
That changelog rebalanced the role track XP curve from level 6 upward, and Recon is a role track. Using Bulkhead's own published figures, reaching level 10 is 40.0 percent slower than it was, level 15 is 100.9 percent slower, and level 20 is 124.2 percent slower. Their stated intent is that the median player at 20 to 25 hours lands around level 20.
The SV98 sits at Recon level 19. It is the single worst-affected point on the entire ladder, because the 100 to 124 percent band is exactly where it lives. The route is not wrong. The number of evenings it takes roughly doubled the day after the video was published, and nothing in the video could have known that.
The cost nobody mentions is the unlock, not the gun
Our own sniper piece earlier this week compared these weapons on their vendor prices and concluded the class is poor value. That was true and incomplete, and Stodeh's video is what exposed the gap: before you can pay the vendor price at all, you pay a one-off unlock, and it dwarfs the gun.
| Recon unlock | Level | Unlock cost | Then per kit | Tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SKS | 5 | $25,000 | $2,400 | A |
| Mosin Nagant | 10 | $50,000 | $4,500 | D |
| SVD | 12 | $50,000 | $4,800 | S |
| Compound Bow | 17 | $75,000 | $800 | C |
| SV98 | 19 | $100,000 | $5,200 | C |
| MK22 | 25 | $150,000 | $6,400 | - |
| BMR-308 | 30 | $125,000 | $6,000 | A |
| AMR 50 | 35 | $200,000 | $8,800 | - |
Read the last two columns together. The SV98 costs $5,200 a kit and $100,000 once. The AMR 50 costs $8,800 a kit and $200,000 once, which is twenty times the money you start the game with. On the vendor price alone the AMR 50 looks like an extravagance. On the unlock it is a different category of decision entirely.
This also explains something our tier list could not. The MK22 and the AMR 50 carry no consensus letter because too few of the sources we read placed them. Stodeh gives the reason in plain words: they are "only worth taking if you're going to be sitting safely in towers, sniping super long range, or fighting players with level three armor", and he expects to use them rarely because they cost more and are harsher to lose. A gun behind level 35 and a $200,000 gate is one that most people writing tier lists have never fired.
Where he and our numbers agree, and it is most of it
He calls the starting Scout Rifle TD "completely hopeless" because it will not one-shot a headshot on an unhelmeted target. Our figures say the same thing from the other direction: it is recorded at only 28 damage, which is 4 shots to a body kill, and Scout Rifle TD sits at D on our list, placed by 4 of 5 sources.
He says the SVD "essentially replaces the SKS entirely" and may be the most versatile long-range weapon in the game. SVD sits at S on our list, placed by 4 of 5 sources, which is the highest placement any long gun has on our list.
The interesting disagreement is the SV98. He calls it the end game. SV98 sits at C on our list, placed by 3 of 5 sources. Both can be right, because they answer different questions: his is about which sniper carries a Recon player to the top of the track, ours is about which weapon published rankings rate against the whole roster. A gun can be the best in its class and still be a worse buy than a marksman rifle that costs $4,800 and unlocks seven levels earlier.
One number we could not confirm
Stodeh says the Compound Bow "costs 125k to unlock". The progression data we read records the bow at $75,000 and puts $125,000 on the BMR-308 instead. We are not calling it either way, because one of them is a reading of a vendor screen and the other is a line in a script, and both can slip. Treat the bow's unlock as unsettled until Bulkhead publishes it.
His advice about the bow does not depend on the figure, and it survives: the SV98 is two levels further on, so if you are rushing the track, skip the bow and save for that.
The part of his video that has nothing to do with snipers
The strongest section is about spotting, and it is the answer to a question this site keeps circling. Binoculars cost under $100. He reports spotting a spawn vehicle paying about $1,000 instantly, assisted kills sometimes paying over $2,000, and the same vehicle being spottable up to three times in a row. His recommendation is to carry a spotting item in the specialist slot on every class, whether or not you play Recon.
We cannot verify those payouts, and we are not presenting them as facts: they are one experienced player's reported figures from beta play. But the shape of the claim fits everything else we have written about this game. The cheapest object in the vendor generates income, and the expensive one you are frightened of losing does not. If that holds at launch, it is a better opening strategy than any gun on this page.
What we would actually do now
Take his route and move the finish line down. The SVD at Recon 12 does most of what the SV98 does, costs $4,800 against the SV98's $5,200, needs half the unlock, and sits seven levels earlier on a curve that just got much steeper between 15 and 20. On our list SVD sits at S on our list, placed by 4 of 5 sources and SV98 sits at C on our list, placed by 3 of 5 sources.
Stodeh wrote the right guide for the build he played. On the build that shipped, the SVD is where his route should stop for most people, and the SV98 is a thing you arrive at eventually rather than a thing you rush.
Quick answers
What level do you unlock snipers in WARDOGS? On Recon: SKS at 5, Mosin Nagant at 10, SVD at 12, Compound Bow at 17, SV98 at 19, MK22 at 25, BMR-308 at 30 and AMR 50 at 35, each with a one-off cash unlock on top of the vendor price.
Is the first sniper worth using? The recorded figures and the creator consensus agree it is not. Scout Rifle TD sits at D on our list, placed by 4 of 5 sources, and it is 4 shots to a body kill.
What is the fastest way to level Recon? Stodeh's answer is spotting rather than shooting: carry a cheap spotting item every life and spot vehicles, helicopters and infantry rather than hunting kills with a weak rifle.
Did Season 1 change sniper unlocks? Not the levels themselves, but the XP needed to reach them. Bulkhead published the curve as 40.0 percent slower at level 10, 100.9 percent at 15 and 124.2 percent at 20.
Community-recorded from Closed Alpha and Closed Beta vendor screens, cross-checked across independent databases. Bulkhead publishes no official weapon figures, and Early Access can retune any of them. Tier placements are read live from our own list, which is built from 5 attributed published rankings rather than from telemetry, so they move as that list does.
